Black Labradoodles come in many colors?!
Many coat modifiers will create different patterns and shades on a black labradoodle. Labradoodles' coat colors follow that of their Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel ancestors and an interesting collection of modifiers include:
· Merle
· Sable
· Wolf sable
· Phantom and
· Parti
Black Labradoodle Variations
The merle gene will create a patchwork of black and gray spots on the dog's coat. Sable will create a reddish-brown coat with black on the face and ears, wolf sable will create a black-tipped hair on a silver or tan coat, and phantom will create a specific tan or red pattern over their coat, and parti will create a coat with patches of black and white.
Merle Black Labradoodle Patterns
The merle modifier is a relatively new addition to some breeds of dogs. This unique color pattern is created by a mutation in the MC1R gene and produces a patchwork of black and gray spots on the dog's coat.
When present in the black labradoodle, the many colors of the dilution of black have a blue cast and are typically referred to as a blue merle. The coat pattern might be bold with large patches of black, or it might be relatively homogenous and appear solid gray. This coat can also display other patterns as well like parti and phantom.
Sable, Wolf Sable, and Phantom Black Labradoodle Patterns
The sable, wolf sable, and phantom patterns come from the exact gene location, and there are two genes so that they can carry any combination of these modifiers, all with different outcomes. For example, a sable can have the gene for wolf sable, but only the sable pattern will show.
Wolf Sable Overlay
I like the black labradoodle coat with wolf sable overlay. However, if that same sable also carries the gene for phantom, both patterns will be visible (sable and phantom). I think it shows best on the black labradoodle coat as the tan or red points will be very vibrant.
Phantom Pattern
The phantom pattern is recessive to both the sable and wolf sable patterns, so a dog must only carry the genes for the phantom to show a crisp phantom pattern. Again, this pattern is stunning on a black coat and flashy over blue merle.
The Parti Gene
The parti gene will result in a black labradoodle coat that is often more white than black. This is because the parti gene randomly masks the black pigment, resulting in a coat that is predominantly white with patches of black.
